Warri Catholic Diocese Suspends Priest for Marrying

The Bishop of Warri Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido has suspended one of his priests, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, after he entered into marriage.

A statement issued by the Diocese disclosed that Oghenerukevwe, who had been out of active ministry, married Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on 29 December 2024.

The Bishop’s statement confirmed that, in line with Canon law, Oghenerukevwe’s actions have resulted in a Latae Sententiae suspension, which means he is automatically prohibited from exercising his priestly duties.

“He is henceforth prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity,” the statement read.

The Diocese explained that before the marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had contacted the Bishop on 30 November 2024, requesting to be released from his canonical obligations within the Catholic Church.

According to him, Fr. Oghenerukevwe, was reached out to for the submission of documents required to initiate the process.

However, on December 29, 2024, Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. with footage from the wedding circulated on social media.

The church further clarified that all canonical implications of the suspension take effect immediately, preventing him from performing any ministry within the Diocese. However, the Bishop noted that Fr. Oghenerukevwe could petition for the revocation or amendment of the decree if he shows a willingness to reconcile and reform.

The Bishop concluded by calling for prayers, urging that Oghenerukevwe may reflect on his actions and find a path towards reconciliation.
