Delta Police to Impound Vehicles Without Third-Party Insurance from February
The Delta State Police Command has announced the commencement of a strict enforcement campaign targeting the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, effective February 1, 2025. The move is in line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and in compliance with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Sections 1-3 of the Motor Vehicle Third-Party Insurance Act.
In a press statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Edafe Bright, the Delta Police Command emphasized the importance of obtaining Third-Party Insurance before operating a vehicle on Nigerian roads.
“Third-party vehicle insurance is essential coverage that financially protects you if you’re found responsible for damages to another person’s vehicle,” the statement clarified.
The enforcement initiative is prompted by a concerning trend of decreasing insured vehicles in the state, as reported by the Nigerian Insurance Associations. In response, the Delta State Police Command has formed a specialized enforcement team to tackle the issue and ensure proper compensation for accident victims.
“The enforcement effort is aimed at ensuring fairness and protecting responsible road users, Driving without insurance is not only illegal but also irresponsible. Uninsured drivers put themselves and others at financial risk.” the statement further stated.
The police also reminded vehicle owners that they must verify and ensure their insurance policies are current, with proof of valid Third-Party Insurance available at all times. Failure to comply with the law may result in vehicle impoundment, severe legal consequences, and possible prosecution.
CP Abaniwonda urged all Deltans to drive responsibly and check their insurance policies to avoid any future penalties. He stressed that the police’s commitment to road safety and law enforcement is unwavering, and that all road users must adhere to regulations for the safety of all.
