Residents Count Losses as Severe Storm Destroys Homes in Delta Communities

A powerful rainstorm swept through the communities of Jeddo, Ughoton, and Ugbokodo in Okpe Local Government Area on Tuesday, April 15 has left a trail of destruction.

The storm, was accompanied by hailstones and forceful winds, tore roofs off residential buildings, damaged property, and left many residents without shelter.

Several residents took to social media to narrate their ordeal from the weather situation.

“Residents of Ughoton, Jeddo, or Ugbokodo whose roofs remain intact are considered extremely fortunate!”

“May the Lord have mercy, please check on your loved ones in those areas”

In some areas, roofing sheets were seen entangled in power lines, while household items and building materials were strewn across compounds. A large water tank was also reported to have collapsed during the storm. Despite the extensive damage, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities.

“We just stood helplessly as the storm ripped through the community,” said one resident whose home was under construction. “It felt like watching all our efforts get washed away.”

Those whose homes were already completed were not spared. Many households were flooded, and belongings ruined after roofs were blown off.

A local shop owner in Jeddo reported that most of her commodities, including food items, was soaked and rendered unsellable.

Some residents attributed the situation to deforestation and other unfriendly eco practices.

“I think it’s time we start planting trees and we stop cutting down trees in our surroundings, these plants have a role to play in our ecosystem, they were here even before us, we should bring back trees in our compounds, environment and surrounding” a resident remarked.

The commuters have urged authorities to provide immediate relief and assess the full extent of the damage.
